Make a Difference Day is Oct. 27

One of the nation’s biggest days of volunteerism is making a big buzz across the country

Have you ever heard the saying, “If you think you’re too small to make a difference, try falling asleep with a mosquito in the room?”

This philosophy is taken to heart by thousands of people every year on the fourth Saturday in October – Make a Difference Day.

For more than two decades, this day of community service has created a buzz across the country as volunteers gather to help others. No project is too small, no act of kindness insignificant. We can all make a positive difference.

Here’s some inspiration from Thrivent members who supported Make a Difference Day in 2017:

  • Gather what’s needed most. Quawana’s Coats and Community Service provides coats and personal items to anyone in the community – no questions asked. A Thrivent Action Team collected much-needed hygiene supplies in conjunction with the organization’s Make a Difference Day event.
  • Give the gift of inspiration. Seventy middle school students and leaders formed a Thrivent Action Team to create plaques with inspirational messages. The plaques were given to residents of a local assisted living community.
  • Share some blessings. While filling "blessing bags” with personal items, confirmation students learned about the challenges faced by people experiencing homelessness. The blessing bags were given to church members to keep in their cars and give to people in need.
