Record-breaking wildfires in California

Here's how you can help support wildfires disaster relief and recovery efforts

More than 14,000 firefighters are battling 18 wildfires across California. To date, the fires have killed 13 people, including four fire fighters, and destroyed more than 1,000 homes. The Mendocino Complex fire – California's largest wildfire in history – has burned more than 300,000 acres.

With so many active fires, Thrivent members and friends have many opportunities to support communities in desperate need of assistance.

Thrivent members there in times of need

Thrivent member Margaret Rude of Redding, California, led a Thrivent Action Team on July 31, 2018, to comfort kids who had to evacuate their homes due to the fires. They delivered stuffed animals to Red Cross volunteers who welcomed the children when they arrived at a local shelter.

Bob Grosch, Thrivent member and Red Cross volunteer, participated in the project. "Of all the things I do in my role with the Red Cross, handing a new stuffed animal to a frightened and confused child is one of the most rewarding," Bob says. "They smile. They relax. They realize they will be sleeping that night in a place filled with friendly people. This project is making a difference."

Darryl Schmidt, manager of Community Engagement in Gold River, California, is witnessing similar acts of kindness and generosity, 175 miles away: "In the midst of these wildfires, we see the incredible blessings of people coming together and collaborating with Christians from all walks to support neighbors in need."

The Thrivent Member Network – Pacific Sierra Region will match up to $100,000 in personal donations. This matching opportunity will run until the $100,000 match is met or until October 31, 2018, whichever comes first. Together, we can provide immediate relief and long-term support.

Update: We have exceeded our initial goal of $100,000 in personal donations. Thank you for your generosity! We are excited to announce that Thrivent will add an additional $100,000 to the matching opportunity. All personal donations made through to the disaster response organizations listed below will be matched until the $200,000 goal is met or until October 31, 2018, whichever comes first. Together, we can provide immediate relief and long-term support.
